David Slemp
David has lived in St. Augustine, FL all his life and started lifeguarding for St Johns County Ocean Rescue when he was 15. He swam competitively for over 10 years. He grew to become a Firefighter Medic and worked for St. John’s County for over 35 years and retired in 2016.
His passion for the water got him into competitions behind the boat. His biggest accomplishments were in barefoot waterskiing. He set national records and titles in his age group during the 1990’s. He also competed in kneeboarding and wakeboarding, and placed 2nd in the 2004 World Police and Fire Games.
He loves surfing and got into stand up surfing due to two injured hips, that have since been replaced when he was 50 years old. He races paddleboards all over the country. One of his greatest experiences was in 2018, racing on a SUP team from Bimini Bahamas to West Palm Beach FL. His four man team paddled 84 miles in 11.5 hours, to be the first finishers of the Crossing for a Cure Race. This was the 3rd year of this charity event to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis.
His new love on the water is hydrofoiling in the surf and behind a ski or boat. You can occasionally catch him and friends doing tow-ins out on the shoals of the St. Augustine Inlet.
